On May 15, 2015 Andrey Ivanov became the 13th sommelier to win the title of Chaine des Rotisseurs’ Best Young Sommelier Competition. He beat out nearly 200 other competitors nationwide in a series of first regional then national competitions. Held at the beautiful Bacara Resort in Santa Barbara, CA, the finals were a two day process consisting of a written theory exam, a six-wine blind tasting flight, and a mock service exam. After the first day, the top three finalists competed live in front of an audience of peers and enthusiasts in a series of even more difficult scenarios. In the end, Andrey won top prize with his friends Mia Van de Water of New York and John Filkins of Baltimore finishing in 2nd and 3rd place, respectively.


This is the third consecutve year Andrey has made it to the National Finals of this competition. He tied for 1st place last year, but was beaten on a tie-breaker by Jane Lopes of New York and took home 2nd place officially. Andrey had advanced to the regional finals for 5 consecutive years. He is officially retired from the competition, returning as a judge in next year’s event.
